| For some reason (which they pretended to explain, but didn't really make very clear) every year to celebrate Carnival the people of Ivrea in Piedmont close their town, drape protective nets over their buildings and spend 3 days throwing oranges at each other. | |
| The theory is that if you are wearing something red on your head then noone is allowed to throw oranges at you... in practice it's best not to turn up at all if you don't want to be hit by an orange... their aim isn't so good. | |
| Every borgata (zone) of the town dresses in their colours and does battle with a carriage of warriors from each of the other borgate which pass around the town, by throwing oranges at them... | |
Taunting the opposition! | |
| The warriors in turn fill their carriage with oranges and try to protect themselves from the borgate by throwing oranges at them! | |
| The carriages are pulled by horses, which somehow seem to avoid being hit by oranges or particularly troubled by the mayhem around them. | |
| Battle takes place in the various piazze around the town, be they large or very small. The small ones are inevitably more dangerous for spectating. | |
| Did I mention the mayhem? | |
| Apparently an entire train full of oranges arrives the week before. They use JCBs to clear the streets afterwards, and I can only imagine that a train full of orange juice leaves the week afterwards. | |
