21st-23rd February 2009:
Carnevale di Venezia

Carnival in Venice is supposedly one of the "must see" events in the world, so we decided to make sure we saw it while we are living in Italy. We booked the accommodation the best part of a year in advance...
...in the Foresteria of the Waldensian Church, which comes highly recommended, is situated amazingly centrally, is in a lovely old palazzo and obviously goes towards helping an organisation which we ourselves have worked for in the past.
We arrived in Venice tired and in need of a holiday. After a bitterly cold winter we were blessed with some beautiful February days.
And so to Carnival...
The objective of carnival in Venice is to take as many photos as possible!
We didn't actually do very much during our stay, it is sufficient to wander the streets, absorb the party atmosphere and enjoy looking at all the amazing costumes on display. A (small) selection of which follows...
They weren't all taking it quite so seriously. There were a lot of people simply wearing silly outfits, masks, make-up, drag etc. etc. and some that had gone to a lot of effort in order to look ridiculous!
Another highlight of Carnival in Venice - Fritelle. A sort of doughnut containing dried fruit that is typical of this time of year. The best ones came with Zabaglione inside and were impossible to eat in a dignified manner. Fantastic!
With very little persuasion, we entered into the party atmosphere.
As if his nose wasn't big enough already!
Confetti. More of it than you have ever seen in your life. They don't actually bother to try sweeping it up and the city is carpeted with it.
A great weekend, with many wonderful memories.
