11th April 2009:
Easter

Joy, Chris, Viv and Pearl visited us in Turin for the long Easter weekend.
First stop was the historic "Al Bicerin" café.
It is a tiny place, full of atmosphere and is famous for its eponymous drink - coffee, chocolate and cream!
Mmmmm.
We celebrated Easter Day with a traditional English home cooked roast lamb...
...and Italian ice creams for afternoon tea!
On Easter Monday we took the funicular train which runs up the hill by Turin...
...to the Basilica of Superga.
Which commands spectacular views over the whole city, and the mountains behind.
The Italian tradition is to have a picnic on Easter Monday, and we happily conformed, spreading ourselves out in the sunshine with a stunning view.
Back down to the city...
...and cooling off in a fountain.
On Tuesday we took a trip out to the Castle of Manta. A very well managed attraction with impressive frescoes and set in beautiful countryside.
For lunch we moved onto the nearby hill town of Saluzzo. Another beautiful setting, with winding, mediaeval streets.
We persuaded a restaurant that it was good enough weather for us to eat outside and we promptly took over half the piazza with an extended lunch in the sunshine. Bliss!
A busy day finished with a visit to the Abbey of Staffarda...
...and another sit down in another café!
