20th-28th August 2009:
Boat Holiday

Rachel took a trip up to Wallasey to see family and friends and had a pleasant day out with Auntie Viv and Gargs in Nantwich.
They then struggled down the M6 with the rest of the family to meet Al somewhere near Trowbridge for the start of the week long narrow boat holiday on the Kennet and Avon Canal.
Causing chaos from the start, driving the boat into the hedgerow so that the crew can collect blackberries for dinner.
The main flight of 16 locks at Caen Hill near Devizes. We turned the boat around rather than losing a day going up and back down the locks, but we enjoyed the view anyway.
A typical day on the boat, wandering to a small village and visiting its church. It was around this time that we started writing limericks again...
The was a young man from Devizes,
Whose ears were of different sizes,
no, no, that's not appropriate at all. You'll have to ask Joy if you want the full version of that one.
This church had a very suitable stained glass window.
Enjoying some sunshine...
...although it must be raining not far away.
A roast dinner on the bank.
An example of the correct face to make at Chris when he has nicked some of your risotto.
BBQ time. Mmmmmmm.
Cruising into Bath, a spectacular scene...
...and a great place to moor for the night.
Sampling the tea and pastries in the Pump Room. (The ensuing fight for the custard slice was ugly and best not documented.)
Bath Abbey.
An evening visit to the Roman Baths...
...atmospherically lit by flaming torches. We enjoyed ourselves so much that they finally had to throw us out after closing time, the last people there.
A friendly Bath swan looking for some breakfast.
But Al had breakfast under complete control - a wonderful British Bacon Butty.
Our day of rain...
...but it didn't last long and we were soon swimming in the river.
A feeble attempt to wash the river water off.
Mr Salvat's wonderful coffee house in Bradford-on-Avon.
Although the toilet on the boat was blocked by the end of the week, I'm pretty sure this sign was referring to the coffee room...
